This young woman was sitting under a big tree in the park working on a book she’s writing. I almost expected her to decline my request, but she was very open and happy to participate in the project. I was thrilled with the wisdom she articulated about challenges she’s faced, her dreams, and female role models she wished existed.
She was one of two people I chose to not ask the question about sex. She was a beautiful young woman wearing a not-so-modest dress. My instinct was she had met plenty of people who wanted to talk about sex or her body, and I didn’t want that to interfere with the safety and vulnerability we’d created with our time together. I’m glad I changed the question. It’s never about the specifics of someone’s answer, it’s about the space in which someone feels safe to share them.
