Day 44/50 • “What This Drawing Means to Me Wednesday”

In today’s video I show the process of creating this drawing. After talking for forty-four days about the techniques I use, I realize I should finally mention there are probably a hundred other ways to do these things.

I took drawing and painting classes in college that gave me a good base of information from which to work. On top of that I’ve done a lot of experimenting and trial and error. No doubt there are classically trained artists who would poke a million holes in what I’ve shared, but that’s okay. The main thing I want people to take away from these videos is not technique. It’s the process of creating that’s most important to me.

This is a little thing I wrote for my book last year…
---
Creativity seems to have taken on a label that belongs only to a chosen few.
I, however, believe it’s something we all possess.
Creativity is just the process of seeing something differently than how it’s been presented.
Taking what you’ve been given and turning it around.
Looking at it upside down. Inside out.
Walking away from it. Dreaming about it.
Dunking it under water or burying it until the earth does the dirty work for you.
Creativity is just taking what you’ve been given and reimagining it,
doing whatever it takes to see something in an all new light.
That’s something anyone can do.
---

Don’t let not knowing how to do something stop you from doing something. If you want to draw, paint, write, sing, garden, bake, whistle, tell stories, dance in your kitchen, or wear clothes that push boundaries...do it. Do all of it. The process of taking what you’ve been given and expressing it in your own way is what will enrich your life.

I totally believe in you and your ability to do something no one else can do. Make the world a better place and go do it!
